Celebrations for Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, kick of this Saturday 28 January. The day is traditionally marked with the giving of gifts and celebrations with family, as well as looking to what the sign of the 2017 Rooster will mean for the year ahead - each Chinese New Year is characterised by one of 12 animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac. After 2017, the next Year of the Rooster will be 2029.
As usual, London’s celebrations in Chinatown are set to be the biggest in the world outside of Asia. There will be a parade, which will be a colourful celebration of Chinese music, dance and acrobatics, as well as a drumming troupe from Hong Kong, plus a performance from the London Chinese Philharmonic Choir.
